My response to opinion piece “Health Care Gaps” (Sun May 7)
Ms. Anne Courtright, in her article “Health Care Gaps” advocates that “care rather than profit should be the driving force” behind the American health care system. What she fails to realize is that ‘care’ is not a driving force and never can be. To the exact extent that ‘profit’ is removed as an incentive to doctors (and any other professional, for that matter), the ‘care’ will proportionately disappear. Socialized medicine fails on two accounts: in its impracticality and, most importantly, in its immorality – the violation of the individual rights of doctors and patients.
